Our Executive Team

Derek Newell

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Derek Newell joined NextCare  in November 2021 as CEO. Derek was the CEO of the first company to get the FDA to approve an internet connected medical device and has been working to integrate the internet and healthcare for the last 20 years. Derek has worked in medical devices, disease management, remote patient monitoring, virtual health, and at home testing. At NextCare, he and the team are transforming a large national physical delivery system with over 170 clinics into a technology-first platform to deliver consumer leading healthcare experiences. Derek most recently spent time at LetsGetChecked, the leading at home testing company and Virta Health, an online diabetes specialty clinic. Before that he was the founder of Jiff, a benefits navigation platform used by millions of employees at Fortune 500 companies. He has an MBA, MPH and BS, all from the University of California, Berkeley.

Heather Perry

Chief Financial Officer
Heather Perry joined NextCare in 2004. She has over two decades of healthcare experience and currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer. Mrs. Perry leads the finance and revenue cycle teams while actively involved in business development and other strategic planning initiatives. In her time here at NextCare, her roles have included revenue cycle, marketing, finance, and systems analytics. Heather’s broad spectrum of experience and contributions have been integral in the growth path of NextCare. Mrs. Perry has her MBA from Arizona State University and served on the board for the AZ Health Facilities Authority.

Dr. Tedesco

Chief Operating Officer & Chief Medical Officer
Mark J. Tedesco, MD, MPH, FAAFP, is NextCare’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Additionally, Dr. Tedesco has served as NextCare’s CMIO since 2013. At the time of his retirement from uniformed service as a USPHS Rear Admiral (upper half) in 2011, Dr. Tedesco was serving concurrently as a US Assistant Surgeon General as well as the Surgeon General and Chief Safety Officer for the US Coast Guard. Prior to his 15 years’ service as a commissioned Public Health Service officer on detached duty with the Coast Guard, Dr. Tedesco spent 15 years as an officer in the US Army. His military awards and designations include the Army Senior Flight Surgeon and Coast Guard Flight Surgeon wings, the Army Paratrooper and Expert Field Medic badges, the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal, Coast Guard and Army Meritorious Service medals (3 awards), the USPHS Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medal and the Department of Transportation 9-11 Medal. A resident of Virginia, Dr. Tedesco earned his bachelors and medical degrees from Tufts University and his MPH in Health Care Management from Harvard University. Dr. Tedesco is board certified in Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine (Aerospace).

Aletheia Lawry

General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer

Aletheia Lawry joined NextCare in June 2022 as General Counsel & Chief Compliance Office. Aletheia is an accomplished legal, compliance, and operations professional helping to bridge the gap between the “lawyer world” and the “real world” in the healthcare arena. Aletheia has worked in non-profit and for-profit health systems and her experience has always included “other duties as assigned” – which has led her into sometimes uncharted territory for a traditional healthcare lawyer. She received her Juris Doctorate from Oklahoma City University, her Master of Laws in Health Law and Policy from the University of Houston, and her Bachelor of Science in Management from Oklahoma State University (Go Pokes!) She is a frequent speaker on health law topics, has held several leadership roles with the American Health Law Association, and serves on the Board of Trustees of Scottsdale Arts.

Ian Worden

Chief Technology Officer
Ian Worden joined NextCare in 2022 as Chief Technology Officer. Ian is an inquisitive and ambitious executive with over 20 years’ senior leadership experience in the healthcare industry including roles as Chief Information Officer and Chief Product Officer. At NextCare, he is responsible for visioning, planning, and guiding the development of information and communication technology in support of all aspects of the NextCare mission. Ian has a passion for innovation and leveraging technology to create better employee, clinician and patient experiences and outcomes. He resides in Gilbert, Arizona and is a graduate of the Arizona State University – Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, where he earned his Master of Healthcare Innovation. He also earned a Master of Business Administration from Colorado Technical University.

Dr. Nussbaum

Vice President of Medical Operations
Steven Nussbaum, DO came to NextCare in 2014 with over 25 years of clinical experience in ER and Urgent Care Medicine. Dr. Nussbaum graduated from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983. He served as ER Medical Director at Mercy Hospital in Willard, Ohio and Samaritan Regional Healthcare System in Ashland, Ohio before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2000. He then took the role of ER Medical Director at Integris Hospital in Pryor, Oklahoma. Dr. Nussbaum and his physician partner founded ERgent Care in Tulsa in 2005. They built a prominent urgent care practice with a strong reputation in the community for providing cutting-edge quality medical care in a cost-effective and efficient manner. When NextCare purchased this successful practice in 2014, Dr. Nussbaum was named Area Medical director for 25 clinics in Oklahoma. In 2018, he was promoted to Regional Medical Director with oversight of the NextCare market in Virginia, North Carolina, Texas and Oklahoma. In 2019 Dr. Nussbaum was promoted to Senior Vice President of Medical Operations. He has a special interest in Provider recruitment and retention for NextCare. Dr. Nussbaum is a certified instructor in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

Joleen Haxton

Vice President, Ancillary Services
Joleen Haxton joined NextCare in March 2012 as Director of Ancillary Services and was promoted to Vice President of Ancillary Services in March 2014. Ms. Haxton has over twenty years of healthcare management with a focus on customer experience and process improvement. Prior to joining NextCare, Ms. Haxton was Vice President of Revenue Management for Apria Healthcare. Ms. Haxton graduated summa cum laude from the University of Northern Iowa and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration.

Jesse Henderson

Vice President of Sales & Marketing
Jesse Henderson initially joined NextCare in May of 2014 as the Director of Area Marketing. His current role is Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Mr. Henderson is responsible for marketing all of NextCare’s brands as well as oversight to the Occupational Health Sales team. Jesse brings over 15 years of professional sales and marketing experience across multiple industries. Prior to joining NextCare Jesse spent 10 years with Yamaha Motor Corporation working his way into the National Area Marketing Manager role. Mr. Henderson holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Bellevue University.

NextCare Urgent Care’s rapid growth from one urgent care center in Mesa, Arizona, to one of the largest privately held, multi-state urgent care organizations in the country has been made possible by the dedicated leadership of our distinguished and highly respected Board of Directors.

Malcolm Kostuchenko

Malcolm Kostuchenko has been a general partner for Enhanced Equity Fund, L.P. since its founding in 2005. Prior to Enhanced Equity Fund, L.P. he was a member of MTS Health Partners, L.P. where he focused on equity investments in health care services companies. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Guardian Health Care, Correctional Healthcare Management, NextCare® Urgent Care, Fitness Together and Triton Technologies. Mr. Kostuchenko received a bachelor of arts from Brown University.

Andrew M. Paul

Andrew M. Paul is the managing general partner of Enhanced Equity Fund and founder and chairman of Enhanced Capital Partners, LLC (ECP). He has been actively engaged in private equity and venture capital investing for over 25 years, primarily in the health care industry. Mr. Paul also served as general partner and a managing general partner at Welsh, Carson, Anderson and Stowe (WCAS) and was an associate of the venture capital group of Hambrecht & Quist. Mr. Paul received his B.A. from Cornell University in 1978 and his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1983. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Cornell University and the Board of Directors of Lawrence Hospital.
